I'm Madeleine, the owner and operator of the Adelaide based apparel and art business - 'Little Grotesque Studio' and the creator of all original characters and art on my website.

My business has stemmed from a love and appreciation for tradition 2D animation, cartooning and character design which has lead me to create 'The little Grotesques'. These characters are based on the classic statues found on gothic architecture, often mislabeled as gargoyles. Where gargoyles were created as a water drainage system to redirect rainwater away from a building, grotesques are purely decorative.

There are many theories to why they were created but most believe that they are either a representation of protection or that they are a warning of evil and mischief.

My two central characters represent this balance with The Little Malevolent Grotesque already released and The Little Benevolent Grotesque soon to come.

 

Everything that I create is inspired by vintage a retro aesthetics and created with quality and sustainable practices. My art and apparel is created with the intention of being well loved and well worn.
